CE Industries Energy Division at the SMR workshop in Temelín

On 9 June, representatives of MICo and Chemcomex attended a technical workshop at the Temelín Nuclear Power Plant, together with other leading Czech suppliers and experts from Rolls-Royce SMR. The aim was to familiarise participants with plans for the construction of small modular reactors (SMRs) and the requirements that key partners will have to meet. This new technology is also an opportunity for MICo.

Rolls-Royce SMR, as one of four major technology companies, is preparing to supply reactors with a capacity of up to 470 MW, not only to the United Kingdom but also to the Czech Republic, where it is already considered the preferred supplier alongside ČEZ.

The SMR project is part of a broader partnership, with ČEZ acquiring a roughly 20% stake in Rolls-Royce SMR, enabling the company to actively participate in the development and production of reactors.

SMR technologies are considered an important tool for the energy security of the Czech Republic and Europe, as they offer a modular, quickly installable and low-carbon solution for lower-capacity reactors – ideally installed at existing nuclear and coal-fired sites, including Temelín, Tušimice and Dětmarovice.

Why is SMR the future?

  • Rolls-Royce SMR selected as preferred SMR supplier in Czechia and the UK
  • ČEZ acquired a strategic stake of ~20%, strengthening the Czech Republic's position in the supply chain.
  • SMRs enable faster construction at lower costs compared to conventional reactors – ideal for modernising the energy mix.
